The #1 Superfood: Cod Liver Oil

Cod Liver oil has helped my family and kids so much.  We take it everyday.  It helps me have more energy.  I feel less fatigued and drained- due to my ongoing adrenal fatigue issues.  It is the opposite for my boys, when they take it they are more calm and focused.  It is funny how it helps people differently depending on their individual needs.  I take a butter oil/ cod liver oil mix from Green Pastures which can be found here:
http://www.greenpasture.org/public/Products/ButterCodLiverBlend/index.cfm
For now the boys are just on the cod liver oil.  I feed them lots of raw butter on spelt toast to make up the difference.
Why Cod Liver oil is known as the Superfood : go check out this article
http://www.westonaprice.org/cod-liver-oil/clo-number-one-superfood
"Doctor Price was right, as usual. Cod liver oil is very good for you, more than you ever knew. Research studies ranging from 1918-2001 give cod liver oil an A+ rating. This marvelous golden oil contains large amounts of elongated omega-3 fatty acids, preformed vitamin A and the sunlight vitamin D, essential nutrients that are hard to obtain in sufficient amounts in the modern diet. Samples may also naturally contain small amounts of the important bone- and blood-maintainer vitamin K.

There is hardly a disease in the books that does not respond well to treatment that includes cod liver oil, and not just infectious diseases but also chronic modern diseases like heart disease and cancer. Cod liver oil provides vitamin D that helps build strong bones in children and helps prevent osteoporosis in adults. The fatty acids in cod liver oil are also very important for the development of the brain and nervous system. "If you want to prevent learning disabilities in your children," said David Horrobin, distinguished medical and biochemical researcher, "feed them cod liver oil."

Cod liver oil contains more vitamin A and more vitamin D per unit weight than any other common food. One hundred grams of regular cod liver oil provides 100,000 IU of vitamin A, almost three times more than beef liver, the next richest source; and 10,000 IU vitamin D, almost four times more than lard, the next richest source. Of course, cod liver oil is only consumed in small amounts, but even a tablespoon (about 15 grams) provides well over the recommended daily allowance for both nutrients.

In addition, cod liveroil contains 7 percent each of the elongated omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. EPA is the precursor of important prostaglandins, localized tissue hormones that help the body deal with inflammation; and DHA is extremely important for the development and function of the brain and nervous system. So it's no surprise that in numerous studies cod liver oil has proven to be a powerhouse in fighting disease."

Kids Drinking Raw Milk Have 40% Less Asthma and Allergies

Did everyone see this new study?  This one actually made some big news.  This is a picture of my raw milk that you can pick up at a few local health food stores or the co-op (for a little cheaper).  The yogurt is strong, but great for smoothies :)

This article is from the Journal of Natural Food and Health

here
Reuters, Fox and other media outlets reported September 13 about a large European raw milk study published at the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, online August 29, 2011, showing kids who drink raw milk are 41% less likely to suffer from asthma and allergies. The study included 8334 school-aged children, and 7606 of them provided serum samples to assess specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. Over 800 cow’s milk samples were collected at the participants’ homes. Reuter’s article stated:

Compared with kids who only drank store-bought milk, those who drank raw milk had a 41-percent reduction in their odds of developing asthma. They were also only about half as likely to develop hay fever — even after accounting for other factors that might be relevant. On the other hand, those who drank boiled farm milk had no less asthma than those who drank store milk. The protective effect was linked to so-called whey proteins in the milk, such as BSA and alpha-lactalbumin. Pasteurization remains an effective tool to inactivate harmful microorganisms but may simultaneously destroy whey proteins.
The results of this study brings up two other very serious questions rarely posed: 1) What other diseases and disorders are caused by regular pasteurized, homogenized milk with synthetic chemical additives? and 2) What other health benefits can be realized from including raw milk as part of a well-rounded diet of whole, fresh foods?
1)      What other diseases and disorders are caused by regular pasteurized, homogenized milk with synthetic chemical additives?
First, twenty percent of Americans get sick immediately upon drinking regular milk and this has been growing every year. An informal survey by The Weston A. Price Foundation found that ninety percent of those lacto-intolerant can drink raw milk. What is it doing to the health of the other 80 percent? This study names just asthma and allergies. But there are a host of other auto-immune disorders caused or made worse by drinking regular milk. These symptoms are either corrected or lessened when regular milk is stopped or when substituting regular milk with raw milk. . It is only logical to assume many people do not know the symptoms they suffer are regular-milk-induced. Face it, regular milk today is not what grandma drank. Our article Skim Milk may be making you fat and sick is already the No. 1 post of the year. It tells how skim milk can help make you fat and raise bad cholesterol
In a December 2009 survey by the Journal, 877 raw milk drinkers had this to say:
Health Benefits (of 877 raw milk drinkers)
74% have much health benefit
24% some
2% none
What all responders said about pasteurized milk:
62% believe it has long-term health consequences
15% say it makes them very sick
40% say it tastes terrible
30% say it upsets their stomach
16% say it gives them diarrhea
2)      What other health benefits can be realized from including raw milk as part of a well-rounded diet of whole, fresh foods?
From my experience, I will state that children and adults who drink raw milk are significantly healthier and have fewer diseases and disorders than those who drink regular pasteurized, homogenized milk. One reason may be those essential natural animal fats and healthy cholesterols. A whole set of studiessubstantiate the health benefits and safety of properly produced raw milk.
Humorously, the subject study goes as far as not to recommend raw milk because of its “dangers”. Be assured the FDA and USDA will continue to bust Amish farmers and other dairies producing raw milk intended and fit for human consumption, even though no deaths have been recorded from raw milk consumption in the last ten years. In fact, of 42 raw milk illnesses per year on average reported, using government figures, you are about 35,000 times more likely to become ill from other foods than you are from raw milk, especially if you are careful to select a clean, safe raw dairy. Yet the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have targeted a ban on access to raw milk, included in the top 10 health crises to be addressed in their Healthy People 2020 campaign
Do not expect the milk industry or their marketing partners at USDA, FDA or CDC to fund a study in overall health outcomes of raw versus regular milk drinkers. The milk industry is already losing market share as the underground secret message of natural milk is overcoming television milk mustaches on celebrities. But if a study were ever conducted, the healthier outcomes would not be from raw milk or healthier diets alone. Of the hundreds of raw milk drinkers I know also have children who are not overly vaccinated nor do they drink fluoridated water."
The article can be found here.

I promote drinking raw milk from local farms.  If you need to find a local source of raw milk check  here.  Remember it is your responsibility as a consumer to know your farmer and the food that you consume.  If the cows and goats are looking healthy and happy, your milk quality is in the same condition.  I started my first son on raw milk at 1yr and my second son at 6 months.  They both had respiratory issues early on in infancy, my first was actually diagnosed with asthma, but the respiratory issues have disappeared.  Raw milk is one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet.   Drink Raw milk today!

Top 5 Foods to Never Buy at the Health Food Store

A local woman from around the Tampa area writes an amazing blog that I check weekly.  She is a great resource for health and nutrition.  You should check out her blog sometime- this article is from her blog The Healthy Home Economist.  She is a REAL and RAW food activist, which will be obvious by the end.  Even I buy some processed organic snack for the boys like cookies and chips.  Things I can take in the car or take to church.  Still have work to do I guess :)
Not all food at the healthfood store is healthy! In fact, much of it can be classified as organic junk food.  You can always tell healthfood store newbies as their shopping carts are typically loaded up with these types of foods which indicates that they have only recently made the transition from grocery store junk food and are simply replacing one type of highly processed boxed food with another.
Having shopped at healthfood stores for almost 20 years and seen many a food fad come and go, here is my top five list of supposedly “healthy” foods that are anything but nourishing to you and your family.

#1 Protein Powder

Protein is a very fragile macronutrient.  When you separate it from its whole food source it will easily be denatured.  Denatured foods are toxic and allergenic to the body as digestive enzymes do not work well on them and the food ends up only partially digested.  Undigested food rots in the gut and is the perfect food for pathogenic yeasts and bacteria to thrive upon which rapidly leads the body down the path to autoimmune disorders.
Whey protein is especially fragile and cannot be powdered or dried even at low temperatures.
or more information on the dangers of protein powders and other high protein foods, check out Ditch That Protein Powder.
Do yourself a favor – if you need protein boost, skip the protein powder and eat a grassfed steak, some pastured poultry, or an egg instead!

#2 Soy Milk

Soy milk is not an ancestral food nor was it ever considered of value in traditional Asian societies.  Soy milk is a modern invention – a cheap, mass produced product “fortified” with an undigestible form of calcium as well as synthetic Vitamin D2 which has been linked with hyperactivity, coronary heart disease, and allergic reactions.
Soy milk is loaded with sugar to cover up its awful beany flavor.  Even versions labeled as “original” or “plain” are full of sugar as unsweetened soy milk is highly gag worthy and completely unacceptable to the consumer.  Manufacturers fool the consumer with the amount of sugar in soymilk by using stealth sweeteners such as barley malt and brown rice syrup.
I took a look at an unsweetened soy milk yesterday at the healthfood store and it had the ominous “natural flavors” in the ingredients list where artificial sweeteners typically lurk.   For example, the artificial sweetener Neotame is permitted even in organic foods with no labeling required.
The most insidious aspect of soy milk is its devastating impact on the thyroid gland.   Soy is one of the most goitrogenic (thyroid suppressing) foods on the planet and those who drink soy milk are at great risk of developing thyroid problems or even becoming hypothyroid.
Interestingly, Dr. Harry Miller, the man credited with popularizing soy milk in China in the late 1930′s which then spread to the rest of the world, specialized in goiter surgery in his medical practice!

#3 Organic Canned Soups

Canned soup even if organic is never a healthy food choice.    Organic soups are basically just water, sodium, and MSG.  Organic bouillon cubes are no better and the tetra packs of organic chicken or vegetable broth should be avoided as well.
Anything that is in the store that is soup related is going to have MSG in it.   Organic MSG is still MSG and will produce the same damaging effects to the neurons in your hypothalamus.   Remember that the hypothalamus is the Master Controller of the endocrine system, so if you don’t want your metabolism screwed up – possibly permanently – then avoid canned soup of all kinds as this is a very big source of this toxic ingredient.
If you don’t believe me, just read the label of your favorite organic soup and then read the list of MSG pseudo names. I have yet to find any organic soup brand that doesn’t have at least one and usually several more of these MSG aliases in them.
If you want a decent bowl of soup, you must make your own.

#4 Fish Oil Supplements

Fish oil is a very delicate oil highly subject to rancidity due to the high concentration of omega 3 fatty acids.  Omega 3 fats can never be heated for any reason and even exposure to light and air hastenstheir rapid breakdown.
With this in mind, how then could fish oil supplements be anything but unhealthy given that they are all processed at extremely high temperatures?   They are then packaged in capsules or bottles which sit for goodness knows how long on store shelves until the unwitting customer buys them in hopes that these magic pills will somehow reduce their chances for cardiovascular disease and other inflammatory conditions as so cleverly marketed.
Fat chance.

#5 Gluten Free Foods

Healthfood stores in my area seem to all be expanding their gluten free sections lately. Even grocery stores are adding gluten free aisles.
Gluten free went mainstream this past summer when Chelsea Clinton requested a gluten free cake be served at her wedding reception.
Don’t be fooled by the hype.  Gluten free foods are not healthy and are not any better than regular store bought processed versions.  Gluten free processed foods are made for folks who aren’t ready  or are unwilling to switch to Real Food but are very allergic to regular processed foods. Moreover, they are ridiculously expensive and nutritionless to boot.
If you are allergic to gluten, it is much better to work on your gut health by buying and traditionally preparing Real Food rather than the band-aid approach of buying gluten free processed foods.   Once you rebalance and rebuild your gut so that beneficial bacteria dominate rather than the pathogens that are in control in the gut of a gluten intolerant person, you may be delighted to find that gluten no longer bothers you!
I hope this list helps you become a much more savvy healthfood store customer.  Don’t fall for the highly processed organic junk food.   Buy organic produce and one to three ingredient foods such as nut butters or traditional sourdough bread at your healthfood store and you will be well on your way to loading your pantry and refrigerator with foods that will really enhance your health and not just give you a false sense of security and empty your wallet!

Nutrition is a journey, not a destination

The other day I had a babysitter over and she asked me a funny question.  She said "I hope you don't mind me asking, but why do you buy all this organic/raw food?"  I stopped to think for a second.  Usually in these situations I try to do a quick 10 second evaluation on what the person asking me is really ready to hear.  I can have some pretty intense and long answers, which some listeners are not expecting.  In her case,  I knew that I had to keep the answer simple and practical.  I quickly responded: "The reason is because 90% of the food we eat outside the home is not organic/raw, so I want to make sure that everything we eat inside the home is organic and healthy.  We don't eat out that much, and when we do I don't have to worry about the quality -thanks to the fact that I know that the boys are being well nourished and properly fed at home. " Of course I didn't mention that when we eat out I often bring all my little home-made treats along with me in the car....like I said sometimes it is just little steps.   I knew that she was not looking for a very detailed explanation about the health benefits of eating/raw organic, just a practical one.  If I can influence one teenager to stop eating junk food at home or school I believe that I have made a difference.  She always thanks me for having a nutritious meal to eat, not a frozen pizza or fast food like other families she babysits for.  Change happens one person at a time!

Nutrition is a journey, not a destination.  All of our stories are different, starting with how we were fed as children.  I have learned time and time again that we can not control the past, just the future.  Today is what matters most.  That is why you should eat Organic/raw today :)

Eat local/Eat Raw/ Eat Organic

I love supporting our local famers and co-ops.  I think it is important that our money stays local whenever possible.  I am fortunate that the Tampa Bay Area has so many high quality products from organic and grass-fed farms.  I am a member of many groups around the Tampa Bay Area.  I support Tampa Bay Organics- they deliver organic produce and vegetables each week.  I am also a member of our local Weston A Price Chapter.  I meet at a local pickup once a week for my raw cow's milk, farm fresh eggs, raw butter, raw yogurt, etc.  There are many other products available.  Anything else I need for my kitchen I can pick up at our local Nutrition Smart or Abby's Nutrition.  Going Green Tampa is a website where you can access all businesses in the Tampa Bay area that are organic, green, and eco-friendly.

There are some products that are more difficult to find in this area- like local raw cheese.  This is one product that is sold by Beyond Organics that I can't wait to try.  The real raw cheddar cheese that I am looking for.  My boys go through cheese like some families go through cereal.  I am also looking forward to their grass-fed ground beef and hotdogs! Check out the labels- they speak for themselves.  I am a "label freak"- so that was the first thing that I checked :)  If you can't find something that is high quality and local, check out this site! Also, sometimes it is just nice to have things delivered.  Their drink line: probiotic (whey) drink, infusion water (fruit, veggie, and energy- using only extracts), and also their kefir drink (which we are big fans of in this house) look amazing and I have heard that they are very good.  I spend about a lot of money each month on probiotic drinks and I can't wait to have them delivered :)

Someone with a real cause...

I have recently learned about a Floridian that is passionate about many of the same things that I am passionate.  The biggest difference between us....he is a multi-millionaire!  His name is Jordan Rubin.
Jordan’s Story
Jordan grew up in a health-conscious family. His father, trained as a naturopathic doctor and chiropractor, taught Jordan the principles of natural health at an early age. At age 19, Jordan- -then a freshman at Florida State University--saw his health suddenly deteriorate, including an alarming weight loss of 80 pounds. He experienced excruciating digestive pain and nausea before he was ultimately diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, a supposedly incurable chronic illness that wreaks havoc on the digestive and immune systems. Wheelchair-bound and wasting away, Jordan's weight bottomed out at 104 pounds. He was told by a doctor that it was "the worst case of Crohn's" he had ever seen, and that he did not expect Jordan to live much longer.
Despite this grim diagnosis, Jordan and his family were determined to fight the disease. They sought the help of over 70 conventional and alternative medical experts, but to no avail. After numerous hospitalizations and nearly two years of pain and suffering, Jordan's quest for answers concluded with a visit to a California nutritionist. The man, who Jordan credits as the inspiration for his dramatic health turnaround, simply told Jordan that he was not healthy because he was not following a health plan based on the bible, proven through history, and confirmed by science.
Inspired by this advice, Jordan meticulously studied hundreds of biblical references about living a healthy lifestyle. He revamped his diet, relying on whole foods consumed in biblical times: raw, organically grown whole grains, fruits and vegetables, as well as fermented dairy, grass-fed beef and poultry. He also added a daily regimen of probiotics teeming with beneficial bacteria. The results were beyond anything Jordan could have hoped for. After 40 days on a biblically based diet, Jordan gained 29 pounds. The health revitalization he had been praying for had finally arrived. By his 21st birthday he was tipping the scales at more than 180 pounds, free of the digestive problems that had plagued him for years, and ready to reclaim his life.
Beyond Organic Ranches

In 2009, Jordan launched a state-of-the-art grassland operation and organic dairy farm on nearly 8,000 acres in southern Missouri. Utilizing a mixed agricultural platform, the new company will concentrate on 100 percent GreenFedTM dairy, beef and other specialty foods. The ranches are farmed in accordance with Rubin’s biblical-based principles and the production practices will be detailed in a future book, Farming for Our Future.

The primary initial product will be a new, fermented dairy beverage derived from traditional breeds of cattle that have been successfully bred to produce a highly digestible product that has not been available for more than 2,000 years. In addition to dairy cows, Jordan’s ranches will eventually have several thousand dairy sheep and dairy goats, allowing the ability to blend milk from all three species for truly distinctive dairy products. A herd of beef cows mostly Red Angus bulls native to the region will be kept and finished on grass.

When Jordan’s Beyond Organic ranches are fully operational, they will provide several hundred jobs for people in an economically depressed region of the Ozarks. Jordan’s mission is to use every square inch of the ranches to help provide high quality, nutrient dense, beyond organic foods to the surrounding communities as well as the entire nation.

I am so excited about these products that are launching Nov 1st!  I am thrilled that Jordan is taking on the huge food corporations that DOMINATE our food sources with greed, corruption, and poor quality.  Check out the amazing products that they have to offer.  And sign up to be a "mission marketer" like myself and be a part of this amazing food movement :)  Spread the Word!
